Let’s face it, shopping is expensive; there is only so much vintage clothing you can buy before looking victim-y. And, c’mon now, unless you want to look like you rummaged through Star Jones’ old wardrobe, you are going to have to do some serious alterations should you go that route.
So, unless both you and your boss know that your middle name is BJ, here are some tips to make fall shopping slightly easier to swallow (no pun, intended) on the wallet. Here’s what you can bring back from you closest and still look superwick…

#5. Your hair-straightener!
Jennifer Anniston based an entire career on it – and now its back! I guess it’s this whole nod to 90’s minimalism and grunge. Unlike the 90’s version, though, it’s not “I-can-cut-diamonds-with-the-ends-of-my-hair” straight. It’s a softer kind of straight; a slight wave is even charming.
#4. Oversize, Neutral Sweaters
Hopefully you didn’t throw out any big, old sweaters you thought you would never wear. No, I am not talking about those Club Monaco ones with the circular logo. Think simple, maybe v-beck, like this Stella McCartney, in a nice fabrication.
#3. The LBD.
Yes, I know this is a classic. This season, the little black dress becomes a fashion piece on its own. Pair it with tights (like Alber Elbaz’s did at Lanvin), maybe even patterned, and a super chunky wedge. One note of caution: If it comes with any sort of drawstring and/or costs less than a pack of cigarettes, drop it!
#2 Cropped Jackets
Think short and graphic. Pair them with skinnies to balance. Never practical, but irresistibly stylish.
#1. The long, Denim Skirt
A long-time favourite of librarians and conservative religious groups, the long, denim skirt makes a surprise return. Besides janitors, who ever though the words ‘floor-sweeping” and ‘school” would be so compatible?

I would revere Alber Elbaz a lot more if he weren’t so damn ugly.
P.S. Have a fantastic time in NY, hopefully Century 21 (if you go there) is all it’s hyped up to be.
your blog is great
It’s so fascinating how fashion comes in waves. The long denim skirt is so oldschool it’s hilarious.
I’m dying to get into black tights, platform pumps, and a cute little black dress. I don’t think I can embrace the long denim skirt thing, though. It makes me think of Garth Brooks. Y’know?
Out of all of this lot you’ve put together, my favorite look is the sweater and wide-pants combo. So sophisticated. Think of the swishing noises….and no denim’d ankles necessary!
and on the too-much-vintage-spoils-the-broth thing…I hear you. God, I hear you. I love vintage, but since it has become so ubiquitous, I often get paranoid that my vintage ensembles are just screaming ‘student’! ‘penniless!’ ‘desperate!’
Which is a pity, since I’ve been a vintage lover for over ten years. Well before Sarah Jessica waved her wand and made it so upsettingly popular – and quadrupled the price of every vintage item on the market, to boot.
I have bought like 3 LBD’s in the last week
