I know I have expressed my distaste for this prisoner pattern many times before, but yet I still see this horrendous linear pattern everywhere I go. Its popularity makes me laugh, since people say that high-waisted, tapered pants will never become mainstream because they are simply not flattering. If this is the case, why has everyone from scenesters to Old Navy-shoppers adopted a look that says, “Look at me, I’ve just made myself look 20% wider than I actually am! Snaps for horizontal strips!”?
Frankly, I can’t take it anymore. I cringe when I see it paired with leggings, exuding that oh-so-unconvincing beatnik look. I want to cry when worn with a non-vintage vest, giving off that “Hi, I’m Hipster # xxxxx” feeling. Oh, and I want to stab out my eyeballs when I see it accompanied with a thick, red, plastic-looking belt. Yes, make stripes more unflattering by adding yet another horizontal band around your plump midsection, honey.
Ladies, and even gentlemen – please, lay off the strips. I haven’t killed anyone, right?

I have to agree that people have killed it with the stripes. I have to admit though, that every now and then I find someone who does pulls it off really well, so I don’t despise the stripes all the time. (I only despise it on unstylish people who use it to be “stylish”). And I’ll also admit that I myself have a striped long-sleeve blouse that is actually a Gap pijama that I sport as a top. I’d like to think I wear it well, but for every person who wears it well, there are tons that don’t!
I do like stripes, and you’ve probably seen that it isn’t going away anytime soon from the runways!
