I love black. Though when it comes to an all black outfit, I can’t stand when it is finished with a candy coloured shoe. Red is classic, brown is trendy, but fluorescent yellow or bold purple ends up looking tacky to me, as shown by Cameron Diaz pairing this turquoise shoe with her classy Galaxy dress by Roland Mouret.
It also looks cheap. Considering the fact that Julianne Moore is wearing Yves Saint Laurent pumps, here at The Fashion Group International Presents the 23rd Annual Night of Stars Honoring “The Visionaries, I don’t think cheap is a fair statement at all. So how do you liven up black and still look like you’re worth more than 5 bucks?
Do like this lady snapped by The Sartorialist (far right) and break up the black with charcoal and an interesting texture. As for the shoe, it is still bright, but it is muted by its inherent lightness. In spite of all this, don’t be surprised if you tune into “What Not to Wear” and hear Stacy London preaching, “Do a pop of colour with a great bright shoe!” Stacy’s a laugh, but c’mon now, doesn’t she have a Cruella Deville strip of white hair?
