Roland Mouret: Fashion Revolutionary Murdered by Victoria Beckham?

  • Share

Thanks to Anita over at I want – I got, I came across this interesting article by New York Times’ writer Guy Trebay, entitled “Who dictates fashion? Take a look in mirror” . The commentary essentially discusses the deterioration of the fashion hierarchy I ranted about this week. What intrigued me, however, was his reference to Roland Mouret and specifically, Mouret’s predicted salvation-like powers and the subsequent career death alluded to by the author. It reads, “A year ago the name of Roland Mouret …was on everyone’s lips. The hobbled skirts and elevator stilettos he promoted in fall 2005 were greeted by some as precisely the antidote to a sartorial landscape grown neutral and drab”. Trebay goes on to dub Mouret’s last collections as expected “breakthroughs” in the fashion landscape.

Is it just me or is Trebay painting Mouret to be a fashion saviour, of sorts – rescuing us from “drab” and “neutral” clothes with his tailored skirts and platforms heels, a la Noah and his arc? I would agree that Mouret’s sense of drape, construction, and use of colour are top-notch, but the suggested buzz circa-Galaxy period seems largely exaggerated.
And then there is talk of him “fading away”. I hope by that Trebay is simply referring to the fact that his S/S 2006 dresses simply couldn’t match the success of the F/W 2005 Galaxy, which was donned by everyone from Rachel Weisz to Beyonce to Dita Von Teese. And since Trebay can hardly derive a better reason for Mouret’s shift from the runway to the Gap other than a turning gyre, let’s have fun and blame it on everyone’s favourite fashion liability – Victoria Beckham. I think it’s safe to contend that expectations drop – significantly - once Victoria Beckham steps out in a designers’ creation. Having her then her cite Mouret as her “favourite designer” is the equivalent of taking his career and kicking it down, stabbing it, and then chuckin’ it into the Mississippi River. I wouldn’t be surprised if major design houses had PR Crisis Management Manuals when Victoria et crew (Mariah, Eva, Jessica) get their hands on next season’s collection.
Maybe Mouret “faded away”, as the author says (not that I even agree), not because too few Hollywood people wore his outfits, but because one too many actually did?
