While many designers take the concept of “fashionable men” to distasteful extremes ( think D & G), Christopher Bailey knows how to blend classic menswear with what’s happening today. For Fall/Winter 2007/2008, that meant a belted, quilted metallic gold trench paired with slim fit grey trousers and a classic, crisp buttoned up shirt worn with the “air tie look”.
This season, he played with this concept of proportion, sending down finger-trip grazing knits under jackets of all types, Thome Browne-approved trousers worn with a classic lace-up boot, and oversized cable knit cardigans reminiscent of your grand dad’s.
Bailey was most successful when he stayed within the classic charcol, olive, brown, and camel palette, as opposed to some questionable geometric prints. Likewise, I could have done without the slightly gimmicky (and slightly difficult to wear, may I add, unless your shoulders strech wide like a quarterback) belt-over-everything style that Miuccia has pushed for what seems like eternity and the plush furs accenting collars, cuffs, and accessories of all kind (note: the short fur collars were incredibly sharp).
All I have to say is, Mr. Bailey, I’m a 36 Regular. Do you need my address?
