Leave it to Duckie Brown to legitimately establish cashmere leggings and opera-length gloves as the urban man’s new uniform. For fall, the two designers behind Duckie Brown, Steven Cox and Daniel Silver, took on the best of Europe, but with the signature fusion of one-part-boyish-charm-meets-two-parts-unabashed-playfulness held confidently in their gloved fingers.
From shrunken, toothpick-resembling legs paired with a boxy overcoat to a meringue-coloured hooodie grounded, almost romantically, with fluid pants that bridged the largely irreconcilable realms of the opera and the boxing ring, it was a collection filled with juxtaposition. Shirt tails came long, inducing thoughts of the current penchant for short hemlines on our ladies, while a great minimalist tartan hinted at a rather Brave Heart-like passion for the NY-based cocktail man.
In fact, even amidst the undeniable androgynous undertone of some pieces, the collection spoke about this urban warrior, albeit in a way that suggested “masculine”, never “macho”; armored-like vigor came through via reinvented 80s exaggerated shoulders – this time built as high as they are wide – while gloves – coloured everything from electric blue to unabashed multi-colour explosion – evoked comparisons to medieval gauntlets. Even the layered, hooded series towards the end felt like a lethal mix of street ninjas and hip-hop samurais.
And frankly, how appropriate? With the rate at which these boys are forging ahead, these two are the ones to keep our eyes on.
