Karl Lagerfeld Fall/Winter 2007/2008

Within the Lagerfeld umbrella, the Karl Lagerfeld woman has always been a bit of the androgynous sister to he luxuriously flamboyant older sister at Fendi and her younger, girly sibling at Chanel. How appropriate then, that Lagerfeld explored the realm of 80s power dressing for his fall/winter 2007/2008 namesake line.

Unlike others which have undertaken the task of reinventing this decadent decade, from the first sight of Gemma’s perfectly proportioned rounded shouldered jacket, there was a sense that Karl the Master’s editing skills would be delivering only the best of the best. The result was a thoroughly modern take on the 80s power blazer, wrapped and draped dresses that recalled Donna Karan’s earliest work with jersey, and olive military jackets that thankfully looked less safari and more hard-edged urbanwear. As usual, there was a beautiful selection of trim-cut trousers, white dress shirts, and blouses.

I could have done with something other than the fingerless gloves, ankle boots, and very Chanel-looking medieval gowns at the end. This is a woman who chooses leather over lace and chiffon and the best looks were those that recognized it.
