Tisci Blows it Out of the Water (Givenchy Fall/Winter 2007/2008)

For fall, Ricardo Tisci took Givenchy deep into the ocean and frankly, I’m plunging in head first. From the nautical coats with oversized square studs to the pale pink dresses that mimicked the cadenced elegance of the coral reef, it was, hands down, one of the best collections of the season.

With each go, it seems that Tisco’s label of being “misunderstood” is increasingly discredited in favour of accolades of adoration. Editors are finally getting it – and righteously so. For fall, the key pieces were the high-waisted navy trousers with electric blue tuxedo striping, a naval coat with oversized folded collar, and any selection of the painstakingly beautiful draped and pleated dresses shown. It was detailed without being fussy. It was decidedly smart, while still defining cool.

At times, there was a sense that this is what Balenciaga should have been this season. And likewise, an unmistakable signal that Tisci should be considered in the same echelon as the former.
