Shades of Transvestism? Valentino’s F/W 2003 Campaign

  • Share

I found it! A few posts back, I mentioned a Valentino ad campaign featuring Natasa Vojnovic, which upon first sight made me wonder if Ms. Vojnovic was actually a Mister, dressed and made up to poke at the observer’s sensibilities (Below). Even the strategically-placed purse and curtain would hint that way…I don’t count Valentino as the tongue-in-cheek type, so maybe I’m crazy. Please, advise!

The fact that I remembered these shots, clear as day, 5+ years later is a testament to Steven Meisel’s greatness, as well as good casting. It still makes me long to see nineties superface and former Meisel-favorite Kristen McMenamy (Below), who nails the glamazon-tranny aesthetic perfectly! The campaign did come out right before a McMenamy revival of sorts, beginning when she opened and closed the S/S 2004 Prada show, so it’s too bad Valentino didn’t swoop in and one-up Miuccia…
