2009 COSTUME INSTITUTE GALA STYLE REVIEW (PART 2)

  • Share

Now that I’ve done my good deed for the day, let us proceed to the less fortunate outfit choices from the Costume Institute Gala. This isn’t the type of event that puts Bai Ling on the guest list, but that didn’t stop the gaffes from rolling down the red carpet. I’ve created this very special category for an increasingly common sight…young starlets that are so desperate for sophistication that they wring the youth from their fashion choices. Maybe the heavy makeup and “mature” styling helps them out of uncomfortable ID checks?

The Curious Case of Benjamin Fashion:

Blake Lively in VersaceEmmy Rossum in Carolina Herrera

Blake Lively (Above Left)…as in, hit show/Vogue cover Blake Lively…is throwing a “Real Housewives of Orange County” vibe my way in her Versace. I hear that in her next project, she stars as a gorgeous 21-year old that morphs into a cougar when the sun goes down! Very convincing; Oscar material I’d say. Also, I know, I know, Emmy Rossum wants to be taken seriously (Above Right) but the high neck and stiff material are boring me senseless. The wonderful Carolina Herrera, who designed the dress, is well over 50 years old, and looked more refreshing than this at the event.

Agyness Deyn + Twiggy in Burberry ProrsumAnne Hathaway in Marc Jacobs

Here, wearing Burberry Prorsum, we have fashion icon of the 1960s Agyness Deyn, with new, fresh face-of-the-moment Twiggy (Above Left). If you read that caption with no previous knowledge of who these two women were, couldn’t you believe it? Then there’s Jackie Collins (oops…I mean Anne Hathaway, Above Right) who took it a step too far with the button earrings. I predict a recession Aquanet comeback.
