FALL CAMPAIGN MADNESS: THE APT AND THE TAPPED

  • Share

THE APT:

Phi
At Phi (Above), they made a woman want to kill for a pair of zip-up leather pants. Most inventive spread? Not necessarily. But it puts the focus on the clothes (rarer these days than it should be), and the models are a slightly exaggerated version of what the actual buyer might look like.
YSL
Maybe it’s the presence of Christy Turlington, but this ad is so early nineties (Above), while avoiding cliche. The face and body have 2009′s super-edited  look, but the texture and fit of the leather harks back to pre-photoshop-oblivion. I usually do like YSL’s campaigns.
Miu MiuAPC
Miu Miu (Above Left) makes me want to get all the details- the fit of the top, the feel of the fur, the lining of the clutch- up close. The muted color play is more creative than black and white, and the pose works me out. APC (Above Right) is such a great label, and because they’re so consistent I’ll forgive them for showing us textiles only in the campaign! Jessica Miller is pretty rad, although I’ve seen her in some shoots that were just wrong, wrong, wrong. She’s well utilized in this.
Marc JacobsKenzo
The priceless color play makes me a fan of this Marc Jacobs campaign (Above Left), along with Juergen Teller’s trademark lighting. It’s always as if the person in the photograph has been in a dark room for a time, and then all of a sudden the shades are all drawn at high noon. I know Kenzo (Above Right) isn’t breaking any ground, but the colors and textures are divine= Etro used to be really splashy too but I haven’t liked their ads recently.
Ungaro
Elements of strength and softness in these looks, along with flawless hair and photography, make Ungaro (Above) an instant winner. It arouses my interest in seeing the rest of the collection immediately.

THE TAPPED:

Givenchy
Not only do I love Givenchy (Above), I love the casting choices for this one. I guess something seems incongrous about the models, the setting and the clothes, as if two out of three would work, but all three together clash. The girls are edgy and slightly off-putting, but to me it makes the clothes (crop top aside) look even more safe.
AkrisChloe
If Akris (Above Left) is going to put us to sleep, at least have the courtesy not to give us nightmares about misshapen left breasts. Photoshop disaster? Shiny material or odd positioning? Either way, I’d be shocked if this was the best shot out of the whole shoot. Chloe’s campaigns (Above Right) usually have the best makeup- what happened here? I can’t picture “Madame Tussaud’s on a hot day” being the theme of anyone’s mood board.
Prada
It’s hard not to love anything Prada, but what could have been great was ruined for me by an unconvincing set. I think that with the water, this should either have had a very styled outdoor feel, or else they should’ve ditched the in-studio kiddie pool and took a similar plain shot.

This isn’t really intended to be a full “Best/Worst,” just some campaigns that caught my eye. Which ones caught yours? Tell me about it!
