ELLE, MILEY CYRUS, AND “AGE APPROPRIATE” IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY

  • Share

When I saw Miley Cyrus’ August Elle cover (Below Left), I reacted as many did, by wondering why a 16-year old girl got the cover of a women’s fashion magazine. I had similar feelings when she recently graced the cover of Glamour (Below Right and arguably even more inappropriate), who thankfully eschewed their otherwise omnipresent “THE SECRET TO GREAT SEX: TOUCH HIS PENIS” cover line for her issue.

Upon further ponderance, I feel that of all readerships, those of fashion magazines should already be used to 16-year olds dressed up in bold suits and big jewelry, captioned like, “what to wear in your 70s.”  Fashion doesn’t give a sh*t about being age appropriate! It’s all about illusion, and when it’s not it’s often sensational. At least Elle and Glamour got people talking about their covers, which is all they seem to want. Did you expect envelope pushing from them?

Why doesn’t someone start a fashion magazine using “real” people? Not even average-looking people, just superstylish, cool people of different ages and demographics, so instead of being comfortable your eyes would have to adapt to different definitions of beauty. Imagine if you didn’t have to be a model OR a celebrity to score a cover. “It” paper dolls wearing the same designer’s dresses wouldn’t have legs to stand on! Someone has to have tried before…

Is there any possible way to rein in this rant? Not really. Oh well. I think I started out talking about Miley Cyrus or something.
